The owner of the Sanders is one of Denmark’s most famous ballet dancers, Alexander Kølpin. Alexander’s…. Xander’s… Sanders. After his successful dance career, Kølpin bought the run-down Opera Hotel, downsized the original hotel from 90 to 54 rooms, and hired London design firm Lind + Almond to create the perfect interior for it. It combines a bit of mid-century Danish modern, a bit of British colonial design and a classic French bistro restaurant in a way that achieves the Holy Grail of hotel design. The hotel doesn’t feel like an imitation, but as if it has maintained this look organically over many years. The Sanders, by the way, is a perfect place to stay for a Copenhagen weekend for two. By the way, look out for the photos of famous dancers on the walls; you might discover Kølpin himself.
